“Addressing the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in South Asia:
Mapping Progress, Knowledge Gaps, and Future Priorities”

Organisational Background Information
ECPAT International is a global network of civil society organisations dedicated to ending the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) which includes the exploitation of children through prostitution, child sexual abuse materials, trafficking of children for sexual purposes and the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism. It seeks to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free and secure from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.
The ECPAT International network currently has 90 member organisations in 82 countries.1 ECPAT Member Groups are involved in the implementation of various initiatives to protect children at local and national levels, while the ECPAT Secretariat (based in Bangkok, Thailand) provides technical support, research and information. It also represents and advocates on key issues at the international and regional level on behalf of the network.

Purpose/Objective
ECPAT International Secretariat is committed to contributing to global and regional efforts to end online sexual exploitation and SECTT, in coordination with other partners. While the problem is not geo-politically limited, counteracting the challenge requires a clear understanding of the situation in the region.
The purpose of this updated overview is to inform stakeholder programming on the situations of sexual exploitation of children online and sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism in South Asia and contribute to evidence building on the magnitude and nature of the violence, and efforts to address it.
The main purpose of the Regional Overview 2016 is to bring to the attention of the governments, relevant NGOs, UN and INGO partners, private sector and other key stakeholders on the nature and scale of CSEC (especially SECO and SECTT) in South Asian countries. This document would also be shared with the Regional Expert Group 2members in a Consultation and will feed into Government systems in SAARC countries as part of the formulation and adoption of a regional strategy on CSEC in South Asia.
The main objectives of the overview exercise are to:
- Provide an updated regional overview of the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in South Asia, with a special focus on SECO and SECTT as well as the inter-play with trafficking issues.
- Identify policy and knowledge gaps and future research priorities. (As a result, more specific and targeted areas of regional strategic actions or thematic research will be undertaken).
- Provide updated statistical data and figures of online child victims and travel sex offenders, including quantitative trends wherever possible
 - Propose a set of advocacy recommendations to improve government, non-government and private sector responses to SECO and SECTT.

Timeframe: October 2016 – December 2016
The final deliverable is expected by 31 December 2016.
