Position: Communications and Social Media Intern

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Duration: Six months

Expected start date February 2020

Grading: INTERN

Background

• ECPAT International is a global network of civil society organizations working together to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights, free and secure from all forms of sexual exploitation.

• The ECPAT network currently has 113 members in 98 countries. All are independent organizations or coalitions working against the sexual exploitation of children. The Secretariat of the network is based in Bangkok, Thailand.

The ECPAT internship programme

The ECPAT International internship programme is designed to provide a valuable opportunity for serious and qualified candidates who have an awareness of ECPAT's work in promoting child protection against sexual exploitation. Interns will have the opportunity to gain key knowledge and experience, and will be expected to dutifully carry out the tasks assigned to them under the responsibility of the designated supervisor(s).

The communications team

We are an advocacy organization, so communication plays an important role at ECPAT. The communication team works closely with the Department of Research, Network Development and Programmes to raise awareness about ECPAT and our work, our members and the sexual exploitation of children. We do this through PR, blogs, podcasts, social media, videos and others. We are working to reach out to multiple target audiences such a diverse range of publics in countries worldwide, as well as specific interest groups, such as travellers, hoteliers or law enforcement personnel. We work in an often sensitive and emotionally challenging subject area, and we value creativity, ingenuity and fun.

Overall purpose of the position

Reporting to the Communications Officer, the intern will support the implementation of ECPAT International’s communication strategies, both within the network and towards the wider public and stakeholders.

This is a hands-on position, requiring daily feedback and discussions with the team. The intern will make a meaningful contribution to the organization by helping to develop messaging, producing social and other media, and administrative support.

Primary tasks

• Support the day-to-day maintenance, upkeep and development of existing websites:

• Media monitoring and point out relevant breaking news stories related to the sexual exploitation of children to use in communications efforts and/or to alert senior management.

• Collaborate and contribute to the general work of ECPAT as a member of the team.

Potential specific projects

• Develop a social media influencer policy and improve social media reach and engagement by reaching out to influencers.

• Develop a comprehensive new set of facts for the different forms of, and responses to the sexual exploitation of children, to be distributed in a creative way to reach various audiences.

Required qualifications

• Fluency in written and spoken English.

• Advanced university degree in communication, media/social media, journalism. Candidates with background in politics, international relations, development, human/child rights will be considered if combined with practical communications and social media experience.

• Knowledge of graphic design and video editing software.

• Experience within social media communications.

• Ability to summarise large amounts of information into social media content.

• Flexibility and the ability to work under tight deadlines and in a multicultural international environment.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

A modest stipend of 15,000 Bath/month (around USD 490) will be made available to the intern. All costs related to the internship, i.e., travel, passport, visa or living costs in Bangkok, are to be borne by the intern.
